Physical Therapy in the Treatment of Lateral Epicondylitis

If you have Tennis Elbow and go to see your Doctor for diagnosis and treatment, it's very likely that you'll be given a prescription for Physical Therapy treatments.

But, the question is: How likely are those treatment to help you fully recover?

(Or to at least to put you well on your way to healing and recovery in a reasonable period of time.)

And what if you've already been through a series of visits and it didn't help you – What do you do NOW?

There's no doubt that Physical or 'Physiotherapy' treatments help some Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers recover…

However, in my experience, working directly with hundreds of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow sufferers for about 15 years…

And from what I've gathered from talking with my Tennis Elbow Classroom program members, Physical Therapy also seems to let a lot of people down...

And in many cases, that's after dozens of visits, MONTHS of hard work and precious wasted time and energy – that's gone forever.

NOT to disparage hard-working and well-meaning Physical Therapists.

Tennis Elbow is a stubborn, difficult to treat injury – and my skepticism and criticism has to do with the overall Medical System and how it looks at and treats these kinds of injuries.

And since Physical Therapy is under the umbrella of the Allopathic Medicine and its symptom-obsessed Model, there's quite a lot to criticize. Including how that system, in a way, ties the hands of its practitioners.

So, let's begin with a look at HOW Tennis Elbow is typically treated…

This podcast episode covers:

  • How is Tennis Elbow / Lateral Epicondylitis typically treated in Physical Therapy?
  • What are the techniques or 'Modalities' often used?
  • Is anything missing from this typical treatment protocol?
  • And are there Tennis Elbow rehab exercises you can do at home?

And when spring fever hits, enthusiasm surges with all the pent-up energy and desire to be outside playing again.

A risky combo that catches countless golfers, tennis players and other enthusiasts by surprise.

  • Here are the early warning signs of Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow,
  • What to do if you start noticing these telltale symptoms,
  • And how seriously you should take them.

In the previous episode 'Epicenter At The Epicondyle' we talked about the nature of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow injuries…

Including how the injury is almost always a gradual, chronic one – Not sudden and acute…

And how the problem is one of Degeneration – Not inflammation. How it's really Tendinosis not Tendonitis.

And THAT calls for a completely different treatment approach!

So, now we're going to map out that strategy, which is going to focus on the big objective, of reversing the tendon degeneration.

And here's the link to the article and video I mention in the episode:

In this episode we get to the heart of the matter: The nature of the injury to the tendons.

I call it the "Epicenter" because it's the center of the Tennis Elbow Or Golfer's Elbow injury and pain, and the area with the worst damage – Much like an earthquake.

What causes Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow?

What's the insidious process by which repetitive motions, (whether related to work, tennis, golf or gardening) end up injuring you and causing you so much pain?

In this episode we talk about the central role muscles play in causing the injury. (It's no small part!)

First of all, Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are muscle AND tendon injuries…

And although the tendon is where the most serious part of the injury is – (And what essentially defines the injury) let's make sure we understand what the difference is between a muscle and a tendon.

Why does that matter? Because, although muscles and tendons are two parts of the same unit, they are made of different materials – and they have difference purposes.

Another big difference between them is that they heal at different rates. Tendons, unfortunately, heal much more slowly than muscles...

Tendon injuries like Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are notorious for not healing easily or well – But why is that the case? Why are they often so stubborn and challenging to recover from?

(This is the big picture view, which we'll build on in later episodes – Honestly, I think I'm a little long-winded in this one!)
